Borough of Manhattan Community College ENG 201 Research Paper Instructions Adjunct Instructor Jennifer Leamy Purpose: To introduce you to the resources found in the school library, most notably the online databases, and to give you further practice integrating outside sources into your papers using MLA style. Procedure: You may choose as your primary text either “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell or “Johari” by Samuel Wells. Read the text again, looking for aspects of the text that you either relate to personally or would like to know more about. For example, if you choose “Trifles,” you could take an interest in early nineteenth century farm life, the condition of women in the early 20th century. Another popular option you could choose for Trifles is to do a literary research paper that showcases your own interpretation of the drama and uses the scholarly work of others who have written about this play as your research component. If you choose “Johari,” you might be interested in some aspect of New York City apartment living etiquette, or the foster care system, or the resources available to people who are struggling with substance abuse problems. My hope is that you will choose a subject related to the text that already interests you and use this assignment as an opportunity to find out more about it. Form a research question to help you focus on what you are trying to find out. Here are some examples: a) What were relationships like between husbands and wives in the early 20th century? b) What exactly is police procedure when the police pull over a car and they suspect a child in that car has been abducted? c) Are landlords allowed to rent apartments with no bathroom doors? Find something the inspires curiosity and use the library resources to find answers to your question. Use the BMCC library database “Academic Search Premier” to find answers to your question. We will go over exactly how to do this in class. Write a 3-5 page double spaced paper explaining the relationship between your research question and the text and giving your reader a full explanation of what you discovered. Be sure you have at least two appropriate sources and quote from each using proper MLA parenthetical citation style. Due on Dec 12, 2025 11:59 PM
